Out to Sea: How to Prepare For Your Next Boat Day

By Erika Taylor

Summer is on the horizon. With the sunshine and warm breeze ahead, some can expect a day at sea (or lake) in their near future.

With this in mind, it may be time for a refresher on how to prepare for your next — or first ever — boat day.

Bring “The Essentials”

Be sure to bring a towel, sunglasses, and a change of clothes. If you’re planning on spending an entire day on the sea, you may want the option to get out of your wet swimsuit.

Wear Sunscreen

Boaters can catch some serious sunshine aboard a yacht. Water can reflect UV rays, which can amplify their intensity. That being said, some might be at risk for a sunburn. Apply a water-resistant sunscreen before boarding your vessel, and bring it along for a touchup later on in the day.

Hydrate

Be sure to drink lots of water and hydrating liquids throughout the day. Dehydration is common while boating, especially on a warm summer day. Warmer temperatures typically cause an increase in body temperature, which leads to sweating. If fluids are not replenished, dehydration is almost a guarantee.

Not to mention, some even feel that dehydration can lead to an increased risk of a boating accident, should you find yourself captaining a boat.

Have Fun (Responsibly)

If you’ve had a bit too much to drink, perhaps it would be better to let someone else captain the boat. Boating Under the Influence (BUI) laws mimic that of laws for drinking and driving, and can have serious consequences.
